By Dan Bc I was recently talking to an old friend of mine who I hadnt seen in a long time. While relaxing and enjoying a few drinks, he proceeded to tell me about his experiences with two attractive women hed met the previous weekend. He explained, "I just wanted to walk across the room and meet them, but I had no idea what to say...I literally thought about it for over half an hour." A selection of cheesy pick up lines and openers hed seen on the internet ran through his head, but somehow that sort of approach just didnt seem right. The pressure built. The more he thought about approaching the girls, the more anxious and unsure he felt about it. He gripped at his beer and started to peel the label from it. He felt as though others were staring at him and wondering why he looked so tense. More tension. Finally he decided to, "Just go and do it" and settled on the best pick up line he could think of at the time. The 15 metre walk towards the women seemed to last a lifetime. Maneuvering his way through the crowd, he eventually reached their side, nervously sat down... ...and blurted out the pick up line. Can you guess what happened? Lets just say that the girls felt no attraction. Sensing that he was trying to pick them up, the women ignored him and continued on with what theyd been chatting about. Im sure plenty of you can relate to receiving that sort of response from women. Guys face it all the time. On one hand the guy feels a strong attraction and wants to act on it, yet on the other he simply DOESNT KNOW what to do. If a guy receives those sorts of response from women often enough, he will either: a) Do everything in his power to avoid it (i.e. not approach at all).
b) Resort to getting drunk and hoping to get lucky.
c) Learn how to meet and attract women the RIGHT WAY and then practice what he has learnt in the real world, until it becomes natural.
d) Decide to just face the music and approach! Unfortunately for the latter, it usually includes some weird pick up line or awkward ice-breaker. Or worse still, the guy will approach with some elaborate pick up persona that isnt even him. Women feel the incongruence and immediately lose any feelings of attraction for the guy. So what happened to my friend in his situation? Why did he feel the need to use a pick up line to start a conversation? The reality is that a lot of guys struggle to start conversations with women. They really do. Ive been there and can empathise with how much of a challenge it is to become a great conversationalist. I can remember seeing attractive girls all year round and not starting a conversation with ONE of them because I just didnt know how. It wasnt fun. I tried pick up lines and they didnt work. I tried to accidentally bump into women at the bar and that didnt work either. Eventually I resorted to desiring women from a distance. Know the feeling? Well I dont know about you, but I dont recall my father nor my 8th grade teacher pulling me aside to say Son, here is the correct way to interact with women in order to spark attraction and make things flow along smoothly and naturally. Yet mothers, sisters, and girlfriends have been talking about the mating dance with each other for years! Its about time you stopped to LEARN what you need to do as well. Most guys fly by the seat of their pants and hope to get LUCKY with women. Yes, you can LEARN how to be a great conversationalist. What I have heard time and time again from women is, "I love a guy who knows how to hold a conversation." On the flip side, Ive also heard women say things like, "I hate it when I start talking to a guy and hes awkward or nervous and just cant hold up a conversation." Your conversation skills are a POWERFUL way of conveying your most important quality when it comes to dealing with women: Your PERSONALITY. Seed Beads Explained

By Tracy Stillman Its hard to believe that for centuries, the production of seed beads has been shrouded in secrecy. Bragging about the techniques would have cost a Venetian bead maker his life a few hundred years ago and, even today, the Japanese closely guard some of the processes involved in seed bead production. The term seed beads, refers to the tiny beads used in bead jewelry and textiles, which are also affixed to accessories like handbags, shoes, lamp-shades and other decorative items. They are finicky to work with and can send you scuttling off to the optometrist, but they produce some of the most exquisite, intricate beadwork. For many years, the Europeans held the biggest claim to seed bead production. Italy, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) and to a lesser degree, France, were the front-runners in producing these very popular beads. Europe still produces seed beads today, as do many other countries such as China, India, Pakistan, Turkey and Iran. It is Japan though, that has the enviable reputation of producing the finest quality seed beads in the world. Seed beads come in just about every shape and color imaginable and may be transparent, foil lined or opaque. Although they are sometimes made from plastic or metal, they are typically made of glass. Understandably, every country involved in making seed beads has their own technique but certain elements of the production processes are similar. For instance, the first step in the process is liquefying silica sand. Whilst the French heat the silica sand to temperatures over 1200C, over a number of weeks, the Japanese heat it over a day. It is at this point, in both instances, that the desired color is added. Once that is done, a portion of the molten mix is released from the cauldron, and an air bubble is blown into the molten glass either by mouth or with a shot of compressed air. Either way, this step forms a space inside the molten mix and the mix forms a long, hollow tube of glass, known as a cane. While still hot, the cane is stretched. Bearing in mind that the now soft glass continues to harden as it cools, means that the speed at which the cane is stretched dictates the length of the cane, which in turn determines the size of the seed beads. Depending on the country where the beads are being made, this can be achieved with manpower or machinery. It might sound unbelievable, but in some instances, men using a metal grip, take one end of the cane each and can run up to a few hundred meters to obtain this result! Once cooled, the canes are cut into beads, although at this stage, the beads look nothing like the end product; they are dull with rough edges. The beads are then put into a mixture such as clay and charcoal and carefully tumbled, to smooth and shape them and then reheated to temperatures between 500C-800C, depending on where they are made and what type of seed bead the manufacturer is producing. This process burns the abrasive mixture and adds a yet unseen shine to the beads. They are then washed and dried and finally reveal their true color and luster. Individual taste affects opinion of what the most striking seed beads are today. Many would say the Japanese but some prefer the Czech seed beads which are not quite so perfect and often more rounded in shape. The Japanese seed beads are made by three major companies; Miyuki, Matsuno and Toho. The term Japanese Delicas, used to refer to the most highly prized seed beads, actually refers to the beads by that name made by Miyuki. When Miyuki introduced these beads, they became an overnight success and the other two Japanese players soon followed with their own versions; Matsunos Magnifica and Tohos Aiko. Consequently, when sourcing Japanese Delicas, it pays to know exactly which bead companys version you are after. As you might imagine, given their size, there is a special system of scale used to classify seed beads. The measurement is called an aught (pronounced like taught without the t), and it is thought that this measure may have originated as the number of beads that could comfortably be strung on a one inch length of cord. The trick with seed bead sizing is to remember; the smaller the number, the larger the bead size. The most commonly used sizes are 8/0 and 11/0, although the smaller size 15/0 seed beads are often used in intricate bead weaving designs. Some of the names given to seed beads include: Delica beads which are cylindrical in shape with a large 11/0 hole which allows you to pass your thread through the same bead many times making them ideal for bead weaving projects as well as embellishing fabric and bead embroidery.

Given the dazzling array of colors, shapes and sizes of the various kinds of seed beads, its easy to see how versatile they can be when used in different ways. They certainly require more time and effort to work with than other beads but the results they give, make the effort truly rewarding! Shade tolerant grasses: If you are determined to grow grass under and around trees you need to use a shade tolerant grass. In our area Fine Fescue is your best bet. However once again you are fighting the shade issue. Fine Fescue requires at least a 50% exposure to sunlight to thrive. This sunlight does not need to be direct as shifting intermittent from the sun as it travels through its day is fine. Grass under spruce and pine: As many homeowners have noticed grass growing under these conifers do even worse than under most deciduous trees. Along with the shade, lack of moisture, less nutrients and less air movement, these trees have an extra trick up their sleeves. When these trees drop their needles (needle cast) the needles cause the soil around the tree to increase in acidity. Once again it is just another form of defense trees will use to compete with other plant life. Growing grass in the shade: The number one thing you must do to grow grass in the shade is to use a shade tolerant grass such as Fine Fescue. Removing lower branches and a light pruning of the inner growth allows more sunlight to penetrate the lawn below. If you are mowing under the trees, raise the mower blade 1 level to leave more leaf blade to increase the grass plants chance at photosynthesis. These areas also require more watering during dry spells to compensate for the amount the trees will be using at this time.
